Whilst the house provides the perfect place to
relax, there is plenty nearby for those wanting a more active holiday.
The house is convenient for the Pyrenees mountains (1 hour’s drive to
the peaks) boasting spectacular scenery, varied wildlife and fantastic
walking. Gavarnie and Pic du Midi are not to be missed. There are many
interesting geological features in this area as well as good leisure and
wildlife parks . Kayaking and mountain biking are available in the
summer and of course skiing and snowboarding in the winter. La Mongie,
the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees is just an hour's drive away.
Winter sports season is approximately mid December to end of
March.
Lourdes is nearby (right) and well worth a visit, perhaps combined with a
funicular railway trip up the Pic du Jer or a visit to the Grottes de
Betharram (stalagmite caves)
There is glorious scenery in every direction (including Col
d'Aubisque,
above and Pont d'Espagne opposite) and the
surrounding villages are perfect for exploring and enjoying the peaceful
pace of life. Take in the country markets with their wonderful array of
fresh food . Gascony is famous for its foie gras, armagnac and excellent
wine, so you can be sure of wonderful food and drink and a warm welcome
wherever you go. In the summer there are plenty of fetes and festivals
and a party atmosphere prevails.
The region also has several pleasant lakes offering opportunities for
swimming and boating. Other activities such as horse riding and boating are also
available nearby.
The larger towns of Tarbes (left), Pau and
Auch are each within an hour’s drive and offer good shops and facilities
and have plenty to do and see. There are several historical sites nearby
including the Château de Pau (birthplace of Henry IV). The university
city of Toulouse with its many art galleries and museums is a two hour
drive away.
